Exploring the world on your own offers a unique opportunity for personal growth, self-discovery, and empowerment. From the vibrant streets of Austin to the historic alleys of Edinburgh, each of these destinations embodies the essence of solo travel, providing enriching experiences that transcend mere sightseeing. Let’s dive into my experiences for best solo travel destinations and uncover the magic they can hold for solo adventurers like yourself.
Rotterdam, Netherlands:
Nestled in the Netherlands, Rotterdam is a hidden gem pulsating with innovation and maritime history. Its blend of cutting-edge architecture and bustling markets left me feeling both inspired and connected to the city's forward-thinking spirit. Exploring its vibrant arts scene and engaging with locals provided me with a deep appreciation for its diverse cultural landscape. I recommend an introductory walking tour to get you acquainted with the history as well as layout of this unique city for your own explorations.
Edinburgh, Scotland:
Steeped in history and charm, Edinburgh's ancient castles and cozy pubs create an irresistible atmosphere. Walking along its cobblestone streets, I found myself swept away by the city's enchanting ambiance and welcoming locals. Delving into the numerous free Scottish National Museums available to you can be a lovely escape to the ever-changing weather. The quintessential feel of the Old and New Towns provides an inspired and imaginable trip back in time, almost like falling through the magical stones from Outlander. If you find yourself with beautiful weather, I recommend any of the numerous hikes available across the city. From stunning views atop Arthur’s Seat or Blackford Hills to the colorful pathways at the free Royal Botanic Gardens, Edinburgh is a great place to get lost in nature while still being close to the city.
Vienna, Austria:
Vienna, the cultural heart of Austria, offers a sensory feast of grand palaces, classical music, and delectable pastries. Exploring its rich heritage left me feeling deeply connected to the global appreciation for art and history. Savoring a slice of Sachertorte in a traditional Viennese café was a moment of pure indulgence and cultural immersion. Navigating the metro system (in German) to visit the grandiose estates of Schönbrunn & Belvedere Palaces was an adventure in and of itself. I am so grateful for technology of today, especially Google Maps to help get me where I wanted go whilst not knowing the local language. Sometimes, the best moments are had when visiting amazing sites alone and also having the courage to be silly when asking a stranger to take your photo.
Sydney, Australia:
Sydney, a city that truly has it all, captivated me with its iconic landmarks, stunning beaches, and vibrant food scene. Basking in the sun and surf, I felt a sense of renewal and awe at the natural beauty surrounding me. From exploring the bustling markets of Paddington to taking a leisurely stroll along the coastal cliffs of Bondi Beach, every moment in Sydney felt like a celebration of life and adventure. Be sure to hop on a ferry from Circular Quay to get the best views of the harbour and its sights from the water or navigate the easy-to-use transit system to travel to neighborhoods beyond the Central Business District (CBD) – just don’t forget to tap on and off! I also recommend resting your legs and treating yourself to an afternoon tea in the Queen Victoria Building for great people watching and a little sugar-induced shopping.
Boston, USA:
With its cobblestone streets and revolutionary landmarks, Boston is a treasure trove of American history and numerous fun-filled tours to help guide you through your first visit. Immersing myself in its rich past, I felt a profound connection to the ongoing narrative of America's story. Visiting the Freedom Trail and tracing the footsteps of the nation's founders was a humbling experience. I also found enjoyment in simple walks through the Boston Commons and surrounding shopping areas, stopping for delicious seafood eats around town and even a pint at the famous Cheers bar.
New York City, USA:
The bustling metropolis of New York City is a melting pot of cultures and experiences. From Broadway shows to world-famous museums, every corner offers an opportunity for inspiration and excitement. Watching the sunset from the Top of the Rock observation deck and strolling through Central Park and Hudson Yard were moments of serenity and reflection amidst the vibrant energy of the city.
Austin, USA:
Austin, Texas, with its eclectic music scene and laid-back vibe, is a haven for solo travelers seeking relaxation and adventure. Exploring its vibrant neighborhoods, I embraced a sense of freedom and belonging unlike anywhere else. Enjoying live music on Sixth Street, bopping through eclectic shops down South Congress and indulging in authentic Tex-Mex cuisine were experiences that left me feeling immersed in the unique culture and spirit of Austin.
